As a result of many years of work, in co-operation with numerous countries – all participants in the EU-financed project «A guide-book to the Baltic Sea States' affairs, from conflicts to co-operation» – a radically new study of the historical-cultural development of the Baltic Sea region has been prepared. It covers the diverse and sometimes contradictory historical memory of all the region's peoples as viewed by all participant neighbouring countries. The book, to be published in seven languages, includes 357 keywords in alphabetical order, based on the English language version.

Anyone who is interested in the region can quickly and easily learn how different peoples (Lithuanians, Latvians, Estonians, Finns and Swedes as well as Russians) understand the events that have taken place here.

Having a historical overview of the Baltic Sea region's turbulent history under one cover is clearly of great value, but making it available in seven languages is of paramount importance. For various reasons the closest neighbour nations seem to know very little about each other. The English language edition will bring information about the area to an even larger audience, something that is much needed now that Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are joining the European Union.
